GEES Early Career Lecturers Workshop

What is special about learning and teaching in the GEES disciplines?

6-7th July 2010, University of Plymouth

This two-day workshop is designed for anyone in the first five years of teaching geography, earth,  environmental sciences, and in closely related disciplines for example transport studies, in Higher Education, in the UK and internationally.

The workshop aims to complement the Learning and Teaching courses and certificates (L&THEC) provided to new lecturers, demonstrators and graduate teaching assistants in UK universities. It endeavours to place learning and teaching themes in their GEES discipline contexts, and to address activities which are special to the GEES disciplines, particularly laboratory and fieldwork.  It seeks to:

Day one will look at a range of issues from the classroom perspective, day two will be field and laboratory based. The aim is to give participants time to understand various aspects of the teaching process with fellow GEES academics, and explore discipline specific issues in more depth than generic courses can offer.

There will be some parallel activities to enable appropriate support for participants with different career experience to make the most of the opportunity. Content, speakers and location will vary from year to year so that participants attending on more than one occasion will find new and useful support for their personal development.

The workshop is designed to demonstrate practice, and to support participants in grappling with issues in their own teaching.  There will be space across the two days for participants to share, discuss and develop their own teaching and learning agendas with GEES facilitators.

Some universities will recognise attendance at this workshop as part of the CPD for the new academic staff and graduate teaching assistants.   Participants should check whether there are department and/or University funds to assist with travel, accommodation and workshop costs. GEES will provide certificates of attendance at its events.

In 2010 the workshop has been aligned with the GEES tenth annual conference “GEES Learning and Teaching to 2020” so that Early Career Lecturers Workshop participants can also attend the conference.  Some participants at the main conference will join the fieldwork sessions on day two, which we hope will broaden the experience of Early Career Lecturers Workshop participants. There are 25 Free places at the the GEES Anniversary Conference on 8th and 9th July for those attending the Early Careers Lecturers workshop. BOOK EARLY to take advantage fo this special offer.
